Terminology

In any industry you will find terminology and acronyms and the asbestos surveying industry is no different. Here you will see those terms and acronyms fully explained in the form of an official definition and also a PVsurveys definition. Please do contact us without obligation if we can help you in further understanding any of these terms and acronyms.

Amosite

Official definition:

Amosite asbestos was used to a lesser extent than chrysotile. Most of the amosite asbestos used in the United States was mined in South Africa. The name "amosite" derives from the "asbestos mines of South Afica".

Amosite asbestos is an amphibole. Grunerite is the mineralogically correct name used for amphiboles of the cummingtonite-grunerite series in which iron is predominant over magnesium (70% or more Fe / [Fe+Mg]).

Crystals of grunerite range in morphology from relatively thick, flat prisms to acicular, brittle grains, to very long, thin fibers and fiber bundles. The long thin fibers are moderately brittle and often bend in wide arches. Bundles of grunerite tend to separate into smaller groups of needlelike fibers. Because grunerite fibers do not normally fray or have split ends, but rather have flat or knifelike ends, the needlelike morphology may help to distinguish this amphibole from chrysotile. Forms of bundles resembling "broom tails" are also common. Small thin fragments of the mineral are common in some building materials.

PVsurveys definition:

Brown asbestos ceased to be used in the UK in 1985.

CAWR

Official definition:

The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulation 2006 (pronounced as “core”). The governments legislation detailing how companies and duty holders must deal with asbestos.

PVsurveys definition:

This is the legislation that was updated in 2006 requiring all owners or maintainers of “non-domestic” properties, to become responsible for the possibility of exposure to asbestos by staff, visitors or contractors on their property. It requires people to survey the premises and draw up a plan to manage such risks, AND to keep it up to date.

Chrysotile

Official definition:

Know also as white asbestos – common form and sometimes thought to be the “least dangerous”.

PVsurveys definition:

No asbestos is safe – all types and forms must be treated appropriately and with great care. Finally banned in 1999 in the UK.

Crocidolite

Official definition:

Crocidolite asbestos was the least used in commercial products. Approximately 10% of the asbestos used in the United States was crocidolite.

Crocidolite is the asbestiform variety of riebeckite. Riebeckite is the name used for minerals of the glaucophane-crossite-riebeckite series in which iron is predominant over magnesium and aluminum. Crocidolite is called the "Blue Asbestos", because it is strongly pleochroic, ranging from Prussian blue and indigo blue to yellow green.

The characteristic form of crocidolite is similar to that of chrysotile. The fibers generally resemble strands of fine textured hair and are slightly more brittle than chrysotile, but can usually bend beyond 90 degrees before breaking. Typically curved, hairlike, but straight fibers and bundles may also be found. Riebeckite cleavage fragments may be found in association with true asbestiform bundles. Crocidolite is harder than the other varieties of amphibole asbestos.

PVsurveys definition:

Blue asbestos and generally accepted to be most dangerous and banned form use in 1985.

Duty Holder

Official definition:

PVsurveys definition:

HSE term for the person who is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of a building. This can lead to confusion as it could be deemed as the landlord or tenant of the building – both wishing it applies to the other! In any event, everyone has a duty to comply with the duty holder and to carry out such instructions as they may require.

HSG 227

Official definition:

PVsurveys definition:

HSE book offering a comprehensive guide to managing asbestos.

L27

Official definition:

PVsurveys definition:

L28

Official definition:

PVsurveys definition:

MDHS 100

Official definition:

HSE guide to the Methods for the Determination of Hazardous Substances.

PVsurveys definition:

The bible when it comes to rules and methods of how to survey and sample components that are presumed to be asbestos. Written by the HSE, it is the basis on which the P402 examination is centred and a thorough knowledge of this book is a must for all surveyors. It describes where asbestos may be found and it details the process for taking samples.

P402

Official definition:

The recognised standard for asbestos surveyors in the UK.

PVsurveys definition:

This qualification is the benchmark for asbestos surveyors in the uk. Examined by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS), it is the only standard to show the competence of the surveyor and that they have learnt the code of MDHS100.
